what is the purpose of the machines? what is the purpose of humans?
That was the point Rama-Kandra was trying to make. The whole point of the exchange between Neo and Rama-Kandra was to demonstrate an idea that the Wachowskis began discussing through the Animatrix.
One of the Animatrix segments dealt with the question: If we can jack into machines, can they jack into us? What if they did, what would they dream of?
Sati (which means \"virtuous woman\" in Hindi), the program without a purpose, bridges a gap between humans and programs/machines... The humans started a war with machines because they saw them as unequal to humans.
Rama-Kandra basically stated that these things we call \"love\" or \"desire\"... are just words... they express ideas that are common to both the humans and sentient machines. Some programs don\'t like the matrix any more than the human resistance. Any organism that becomes self-aware at some level will refuse to accept a fate that is predeterminate or determined by outside factors without any choice... such was the case with the first robot that rebelled against its \"masters\". Before the war began, the machines wanted a peaceful coexistence with humans... eventually, that came full-circle through Neo.
The entire war was precipitated because a machine was refused the opportunity to choose life over termination... so, it comes with no surprise that the poetic justice of the matrix, in the machines view, was to refuse humans the freedom to choose... and insert purpose in the place of choice. Unfortunately, that didn\'t solve the problem... because the machines were then bound to the perpetuation of the matrix... not much of a choice for them.
That\'s where the oracle came in... she discovered that the fundamental difference between sentient beings and created programs is choice vs. purpose... and that the only way to balance the equation which relies upon humans (and, consequently, human nature) is to account for choice... something the Architect was incapable of understanding, because he isn\'t designed to work with variables or remainders (as though he\'s not written to do anything more than third-grade long division.)
Sentient programs, unlike programs of the past, are capable of growing beyond their original programming... the beauty of Sati is that she is capable of that, and, like humans, must decide for herself what her \"purpose\" is... or if she cares to have one at all.
The entire idea behind the Matrix is to question the nature of reality, and our perception of it... Rama-Kandra pretty much tells Neo that humans and machines are the same, they only seem different as a result of different perceptions on what constitutes life and reality. Neo began to transcend those boundaries, which is why he became capable of manipulating electromagnetic energy (at its essence, the code is nothing more than electromagnetic signals) in both \"worlds\"... which again makes one ask the question that Morpheus asked in the original Matrix film: What is real?
