Marvel NOW! Hear This: U.S.Avengers
Al Ewing assembles America's foremost fighting team!
Congratulations, America, Marvel has a great big gift for you for Independence Day: U.S.AVENGERS from writer Al Ewing and artist Paco Medina. You’re welcome.
Unfortunately, the United States of the Marvel Universe sometimes cannot appreciate the present they have been given and this proves to not be an exception.
“There are people who agree with it and people who don't,” Ewing admits of the initiative at the heart of his new Marvel NOW! series. “It will have passed quite narrowly in the House and Senate, mostly off the public feeling following Standoff and Civil War II.”
Therefore, the team comes into the world not celebrated by true patriots but rather already facing down the spotlights of those nattering nabobs of negativism.
“There may be some ‘buyer's remorse’ from politicians and the public depending on how well the team performs, how it stays inside its budget, and Roberto [da Costa’s] public personality as leader,” acknowledges the writer. “Also, with a new President coming in, there might be pressure from that direction too.
“This team is going to be much more heavily scrutinized than previous Avengers teams, and it may be on a shorter leash than Roberto’s used to. Essentially, it's there to be a less murky, less unaccountable, one-country version of S.H.I.E.L.D., working with S.H.I.E.L.D. but not part of it. Opinion’s going to be very sharply divided around the world—there will be those with an instinctive distrust of anything so tied to one country and one flag, and on the other side of the political spectrum, there are going to be those wondering why such an ostentatiously American [super team] is run by someone who moved to the country from Brazil.”
The lack of appreciation presents a threat to the internal cohesion of the team as well. In the grand tradition of all that makes the Stars and Stripes grand, these Avengers have been thoughtfully assembled with a variety of viewpoints and experiences. With so much pressure from without though, can the team come together?
“They’re all together to defend the country against weird and wonderful threats, but they might have different opinions about how to do that,” confirms Ewing. “‘Thunderbolt’ Ross is probably the most traditionally conservative out of all of them, and I can see him butting heads with some of the others—especially Roberto, who’s a much younger man.”
Do not worry though, the U.S.Avengers still have their focus on reflecting what makes America a shining city on a hill: action!
“This book is going to be James Bond, Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission Impossible style super-spy stuff in the manner of early S.H.I.E.L.D., with a young, forward-thinking cast trying to make a bad world better,” Ewing promises. “We’ve been thinking of it as the ultimate blockbuster popcorn movie.”
